About this series:

Each painting starts with an image or a juxtaposition of two images. These starting points might be a self-portrait, a remembered or invented face, or a skull (human or animal). As I paint them I let the process of painting itself open up tensions and anxieties that require me to respond. My intent is to work in a way that favors formal invention over refinement, so that each brushstroke resonates with the drama of the creative act. I consider a work “finished” when it has the right mix of inwardness and resemblance. It has to feel like a painting, with a strong sense of human touch and a sensual response to paint itself.
