Portraiture has always been mesmerizing to me.

The expression a face communicates is defined by the tiniest details: the curve of a lip, an upturned brow, the blush of a cheek. During an interaction with another person, these small details can alter how you interpret the feelings you get from the other person. Yet, these are almost imperceptible in the moment.

I am obsessed with getting these tiny details to fit perfectly together to depict an individual person, not just trying to depict two eyes, a nose and a mouth, but a specific individual expressing a very subtle, very faint set of emotions and expressions.

I am also interested in how the medium of oil paint can achieve the likeness of the individual I’m trying to represent, without trying to replicate or replace what could just be depicted in a photograph. I want the viewer to recognize that my work is made of paint: an elaborate and delicate dance of brush strokes, vibrant colors, and textural marks. The viewer can simultaneously see these painterly strokes while also vividly seeing a person that feels real and alive.
